Robert Mobili: Not the First Statement against Azerbaijan by US Department of State

‘It is not the first time the US Department of State is voicing such statements against Azerbaijan. I have personally had meetings at the Department of State within an official delegation on the issue. I invited representatives of the State Department to Azerbaijan to see for themselves that there are no restrictions whatsoever on religious freedom in the country. They came, they saw, yet they still chose to circulate distorted information about the religious affairs in our country’, said Robert Mobili, Chairman of the Albanian-Udi Christian Community in Azerbaijan, while commenting the allegations voiced by the US Department of US on limited religious freedom in Azerbaijan.

He says the Albanian-Udi Church performs rituals in Albanian. ‘How can one ever talk of curtailing religious freedoms in Azerbaijan under such conditions?! Azerbaijan held the first ever ‘Interreligious Harmony’ festival, organized by religious organizations operating in the country, in early March. The festival was visited by foreign guests, who were also attending the international conference in Baku on ‘Embracing Diversity: Tackling Islamophobia in 2024’ in Baku.

We are trying to communicate the truths of Azerbaijan to the world through these international events. Azerbaijan is planning to host an interreligious forum in May, where we will raise the issue of bias towards the religious situation in the country. For example, I met the President of Albania in Gabala, while he was visiting our country, where I had the chance to talk to him about the activities of the Albanian-Udi Christian community’, Mobili concluded.
